🌱 Morphology
Compact, slow- to moderate-growing agave that forms dense rosettes, generally solitary but capable of producing offsets and forming small clusters. The rosettes reach approximately 40–60 cm in height and diameter, although adult specimens can be somewhat larger. The leaves are narrow, rigid, linear to lanceolate, dark green to grayish-green in color, and can measure about 15–80 cm in length. The most characteristic feature is the numerous white filaments that peel from the margins, curling over the leaves and forming an elegant, lace-like web. Each leaf ends in a rigid terminal spine, approximately 1–2 cm long.
🌍 Distribution, Habitat and Family
It is endemic to central Mexico, with its natural range primarily from Querétaro to the State of Mexico. It inhabits rocky mountainous areas, frequently between 1,500 and 2,600 m in altitude, where it grows in dry, well-drained environments. It is listed as a species of Least Concern (LC).
Family Asparagaceae · Subfamily Agavoideae · Tribe Agaveae
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 8a
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −10 ºC for brief periods and with the substrate completely dry. Resistance increases in well-established adult plants with excellent drainage; persistent moisture during cold weather should be avoided.
☀️ Lighting
It needs plenty of light and direct sun, although it can also be grown in very bright partial shade. Intense exposure keeps the rosette compact and favors the contrast between the green epidermis and the white filaments. A PAR radiation of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ (DLI) is recommended.
💧 Growth Cycle and Watering
Growth is primarily spring-summer. During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. In autumn, waterings are progressively reduced, and it is kept practically dry during winter, especially when temperatures are low.
🌸 Flowering
Like other agaves, it is monocarpic at the rosette level: after reaching maturity, it produces a spectacular inflorescence and the flowering rosette eventually dies, while offsets may continue to form the colony. The flower stalk is an erect spike approximately 2–5 m tall, with numerous greenish, greenish-purple, or pink-tinted flowers, about 3–4.5 cm. Flowering occurs mainly in summer, and it has been documented that plants may need approximately 10–20 years to reach reproductive maturity, depending on cultivation conditions.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, especially for its supply of potassium and assimilable calcium, which are important elements for maintaining firm tissues, a good rosette structure, and adequate resistance against stress conditions. It is not recommended to routinely add a specific flowering fertilizer for agaves.
