🌱 Morphology: A small, highly branched shrubby Aeonium, about 20–40 cm tall, with slender stems ending in tiny rosettes of barely 2–4 cm. The leaves are extraordinarily fleshy, short, and spatulate, green with longitudinal red, maroon, or coppery bands that intensify with strong light and cool temperatures. It is one of the smallest and most unique-looking Aeoniums.
🌍 Distribution and habitat: A species accepted by Kew and endemic to the Canary Islands, present in Tenerife, La Palma, and La Gomera. It grows on eroded volcanic soils, rocks, and slopes, in full sun or semi-shade. It belongs to the family Crassulaceae. Greenovia sedifolia and Sempervivum sedifolium are historical synonyms.
❄️ Hardiness: USDA approximately 9b–11b. For cultivation in Spain, we recommend keeping it above 5 °C. It can temporarily withstand around −2 °C when dry, but we do not recommend exposing it to frost, especially in a pot.
☀️ Light: Approximate target 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ DLI-PAR during growth. Intense light is essential for developing its characteristic red hues. In summer, especially in Madrid, it appreciates protection from the most intense sun and extreme heat.
💧 Cycle and watering: It exhibits marked summer dormancy. Its growth is concentrated in autumn, winter, and spring. During the active period, water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. In summer, drastically reduce watering and keep it dry during hot spells.
🌸 Flowering: Produces small inflorescences with numerous yellow flowers, generally between April and May.
🌿 Nutrition: During growth, Desert CHOICE at a moderate dose. Reduce or suspend fertilization during summer dormancy.
