€21,20
🌱 Morphology
A compact selection of Tulista pumila ‘Donuts’, very slow-growing, which retains the sculptural character of the species but develops a more collected and dense rosette. The leaves are thick, rigid, triangular, and pointed, dark green to olive green in color, covered with prominent white tubercles. This selection is particularly notable for its annular or donut-shaped tubercles, which can have irregular outlines and variable sizes, creating a very characteristic three-dimensional relief. The combination of hard leaves, a compact rosette, and white tubercles makes this selection an especially attractive plant for collections of hard-leaved succulents.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
It is a horticultural selection, so it does not have its own natural distribution. It originates from Tulista pumila, a species endemic to the Worcester-Robertson Karoo, in the Western Cape of South Africa, within the Asphodelaceae family, Asphodeloideae subfamily. Its natural area belongs to a region with predominantly winter rainfall, with a dry and warm period during the summer.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 10a
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −1 ºC. It is recommended to protect it from prolonged frosts, especially when the substrate remains moist.
☀️ Lighting
Partial shade. It needs abundant light to maintain a compact rosette and promote the formation and definition of the tubercles. An intensity equivalent to 12–20 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR is recommended during active growth, with progressive adaptation to direct sun.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. Its vegetative activity is concentrated mainly from autumn to spring, coinciding with the rainfall regime of its region of origin. During this period, it is recommended to water abundantly but allow the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. In summer, with high temperatures, watering is significantly reduced and it can be kept practically dry.
🌸 Flowering
It produces a tall, branched inflorescence with small, whitish, tubular flowers characteristic of Tulista. Flowering usually occurs in late spring and early austral summer. No reliable data is available regarding a specific age for the first flowering of this selection.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co. is recommended, with a high content of potassium and bioassimilable calcium. It is applied with watering, reducing or suspending fertilization during summer dormancy.
