Spectacularly flowering cactus · Trichocereus, Lobivia and Echinopsis hybrids
🌵 Identity and classification. Hybrid Trichocereus encompass numerous horticultural crosses selected for the beauty, size and color variety of their flowers. Their parent plants may include Trichocereus huascha, species traditionally known as Lobivia and various Echinopsis. The exact lineage depends on each clone and is not always documented. At Desert CITY, they are sold as hybrids without individual cultivar identification.
🌎 Origin and habitat. These are horticultural plants produced by crossing and selecting South American cacti. Their possible parent plants include species native to arid and semi-arid regions of Argentina, adapted to a pronounced alternation between growing and dormant periods.
🔎 Morphology. Cacti with cylindrical stems, generally upright and tending to branch from the base, forming clumps as they mature. They have longitudinal ribs bearing spiny areoles. Their shape, spine density and length, and ability to produce offsets vary according to the cross.
🌸 Flowering. Their main attraction is their large, bell-shaped or funnel-shaped flowers, which may come in red, scarlet, orange, yellow, pink, magenta or white, or in bicolor combinations. Some varieties develop corollas more than 15 cm in diameter. Flowering usually occurs in spring and summer, although it depends on the clone and growing conditions. Well-established mature plants may produce several flowers over the course of the season. The age at which flowering first occurs cannot be determined without knowing the clone and its stage of development.
☀️ Lighting. They need plenty of light and benefit from several hours of direct sunlight, with gradual acclimation to prevent sunburn. A bright location encourages compact growth and flowering. In greenhouses, assessing the available PAR DLI is recommended to adjust exposure.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During the cold period, watering should be reduced considerably, and the substrate should be kept dry when temperatures are low. Prolonged moisture around the roots increases the risk of rot.
Spring and summer growth. In suitable temperatures and during active growth, water thoroughly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. During heat waves, adjust watering frequency according to the temperature, ventilation and drying rate.
🌡️ Temperature and hardiness. It tolerates heat during growth if provided with good ventilation and a well-draining substrate. Cold tolerance depends on genetic ancestry, the degree of lignification, moisture and acclimation. Since the clone is unknown, protect it from frost and avoid sub-zero temperatures.
🪨 Substrate and repotting. A balanced substrate with a sufficient mineral component is recommended to prevent waterlogging. The pot should have drainage holes and allow the root system to develop.
🌱 Propagation. It can be propagated by offsets or stem cuttings when produced by the plant. Allow the wound to heal completely before planting. Propagation from seed may produce offspring with floral characteristics different from those of the parent plant.
🍽️ Nutrition. During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Cacti NPK (Ca-Mg) 4-4-7 (4-4) is recommended. Assimilable calcium helps form firm tissues and maintain turgor, while magnesium plays a role in chlorophyll synthesis. Fertilization should be adjusted to the plant’s actual growth and stopped during dormancy.
