🌱 Morphology
Monstrose form of Trichocereus spachianus, a vigorous-growing Argentine columnar cactus. Instead of developing regular cylindrical stems, the mutation alters meristem growth and produces discontinuous ribs, bumps, constrictions, and undulations, giving each specimen a sculptural architecture that is practically unrepeatable. The normal form features stems branched from the base, about 5–6 cm in diameter, with 10–15 ribs and areoles with yellowish spines that turn gray with age. Monstrose forms can exhibit highly variable spination and branching.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
The parent species, Trichocereus spachianus, originates from Argentina, especially from dry environments in the west of the country, where it grows in arid and semi-arid zones. It belongs to Cactaceae, Cactoideae. The monstrose form is a horticultural mutation and does not constitute an independent natural population.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9a
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −6 ºC when dry and with well-acclimated specimens. It is advisable to protect it from a combination of intense cold and persistent humidity.
☀️ Lighting
It requires direct sun and very intense light, with an indicative PAR DLI of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ during growth. Exposure should be increased gradually after periods of shading.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Winter rest. During winter, it is recommended to keep it practically dry. In spring and summer, resume watering abundantly but spaced out, allowing the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. Growth is most active in warm temperatures and with good lighting.
🌸 Flowering
The monstrose form may retain the flowering capacity of the species, although flower production is less predictable than in the normal form. A reliable age for the first flowering has not been established. T. spachianus produces large, fragrant, nocturnal white flowers, approximately 20 cm in length, mainly during the warm season. Flowering may recur throughout the growing season in mature specimens.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with high levels of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
