🌱 Morphology
Shrubby, columnar, sparsely branched cactus that can reach 1–2 m in height, with erect or slightly curved stems about 5–7 cm in diameter. The light green to grayish-green epidermis is covered by a characteristic whitish or silvery-gray pruina, which is especially intense on young shoots. It has 6–9 widely spaced ribs, deeply divided into large tubercles or cusps. The areoles typically produce a rigid, blackish central spine up to 4 cm long, accompanied by 4–8 gray radial spines up to 1.7 cm long.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is endemic to central and southwestern Mexico, with a documented presence in Guerrero, Morelos, Puebla, and the State of Mexico. It mainly inhabits tropical deciduous forests, growing on very sunny slopes and rock faces at an altitude of approximately 1,200 to 1,400 m. In the wild, it adopts a shrubby habit and can form groups of several stems. The species is listed as Near Threatened (NT).
Family Cactaceae · Subfamily Cactoideae · Tribe Pachycereeae
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −3 ºC for short periods and with the substrate completely dry. It is significantly less cold-hardy than many Mexican mountain cacti and must be protected especially from cold humidity.
☀️ Lighting
It requires full sun to develop an intense pruina, compact stems, and characteristic spination. A PAR radiation of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ (DLI) is recommended, with progressive acclimatization when moved from protected conditions to direct exposure.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During active growth, it is recommended to water thoroughly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering. In autumn, water intake is progressively reduced until it is kept dry during the winter. During the warm season, it tolerates regular waterings provided there is excellent drainage.
🌸 Flowering
The flowers appear near the ends of the stems. They are white or creamy-white, approximately 4–8 cm long, with a darker exterior, and have nocturnal behavior: they open at dusk and remain open for about 24 hours. Flowering occurs mainly in winter, an unusual trait among Mexican columnar cacti. It blooms from the age of 15 years.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, it is recommended to apply Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae NPK (Ca-Mg) 4-4-7 (4-4) once a month with watering. Assimilable calcium promotes the formation of firm tissues and the maintenance of turgor, while magnesium participates in chlorophyll synthesis. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
