🌱 Morphology
Slow-growing cactus, initially solitary and capable of producing basal offsets with age. The stem is globose, with a very depressed apex, and can become short-cylindrical, reaching approximately 8 cm in height and 10 cm in diameter. The tubercles are pyramidal, relatively long, and very close together, matte green to grayish-green in color. The axils have abundant white wool, especially around the flowering area. The radial spines are few and short, generally 3–6, white; the central ones are usually 2–4, robust, initially reddish and later horn-colored.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
It is distributed throughout northeastern and central Mexico, from Hidalgo and Guanajuato to San Luis Potosí, Querétaro, Nuevo León, and Veracruz, at approximately 1,200 to 2,250 m. It grows in submontane scrub, plains, and hills with limestone soils, often partially buried.
Family Cactaceae · Subfamily Cactoideae · Tribe Cacteae
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −4 ºC, for short periods and with the substrate completely dry.
☀️ Lighting
It is recommended to provide plenty of light and full sun, although it can benefit from slight protection against the most intense summer sun. A DLI of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of PAR promotes compact growth, the formation of white wool, and good flowering.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During active growth, it is recommended to water thoroughly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. In autumn, water intake is progressively reduced, and it is kept dry during the winter. Its large taproot and sensitivity to persistent moisture make a very well-draining substrate especially important.
🌸 Flowering
It blooms mainly in spring, forming a crown of flowers barely raised above the tubercles. The flowers are white to pale yellow, with a characteristic deep pink central stripe, measuring approximately 1–2 cm. It subsequently produces red, club-shaped fruits up to 1 cm long.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, it is recommended to use Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae NPK (Ca-Mg) 4-4-7 (4-4) once a month along with watering. Assimilable calcium promotes the formation of firm tissues and the maintenance of turgor, while magnesium participates in chlorophyll synthesis. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
