🌿Morphology
A perennial, subshrubby succulent with a creeping or slightly trailing habit, which develops numerous flexible, branched stems, forming dense colonies. At the ends of the stems, rosettes approximately 5–6 cm in diameter appear, composed of fleshy, flattened, spatulate leaves that are bluish-green or grayish-green in color.
With low temperatures and high light exposure, the edges and tips of the leaves can acquire pink or reddish tones, especially during the winter. The stems can reach about 15–25 cm and spread laterally, making it especially attractive in pots, rock gardens, walls, and hanging baskets.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Family: Crassulaceae.
A species native to northeastern Mexico, with a distribution extending to Veracruz and Jalisco. It mainly inhabits dry scrubland areas and mountainous environments, where it can find relatively cool temperatures and periods of water availability greater than those in hot deserts. It is currently also naturalized in some European territories, including Spain and Italy.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone: 8a–10b. It is one of the Mexican Sedum species with notable cold resistance. In cultivation, different clones have shown the ability to tolerate significant frosts when the substrate remains dry; there are reports of established specimens that have withstood temperatures close to −10 °C and even lower.
Resistance decreases considerably when roots remain saturated during cold spells. Therefore, cold and dryness are tolerated much better than cold combined with excess water.
☀️ Lighting
Indicative DLI PAR: 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹.
It tolerates anything from direct sun to bright partial shade. High light levels favor a compact habit, reddish leaf coloration during winter, and more abundant flowering. In very hot climates, it may benefit from some protection against intense sun during the central hours of summer.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. It exhibits particularly interesting behavior because it maintains its foliage throughout the year and develops a significant part of its activity during the cool seasons.
Growth occurs mainly from autumn to spring, coinciding with its flowering period, while during the summer it may slow down when temperatures are very high.
Watering should be abundant during the active period, subsequently allowing the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. During extreme heat episodes, it is recommended to reduce the frequency, as this is its natural dormancy period, and to avoid keeping the substrate moist for long periods.
🌸 Flowering
One of its most unique characteristics is its flowering in late winter and early spring, quite early compared to many other Sedum. The flowers appear in branched inflorescences that emerge from the rosettes and are star-shaped, with five intense yellow to golden-yellow petals.
In Spain, flowering can occur approximately between February and April, depending on temperatures and exposure.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, it is recommended to use Desert CHOICE® Succulents, following moderate fertilization and avoiding excess nitrogen. The goal is to maintain compact growth and encourage the formation of new rosettes and flowering without producing overly tender tissues.
