🌿 Morphology
Perennial, creeping, and evergreen succulent with very low, compact growth. It forms flexible stems that spread horizontally and, over time, can spill over the edge of the pot.
The leaves are small, fleshy, and nearly rounded to spatulate, dark green in color with a shiny surface. They are arranged very densely on the stems, creating a compact vegetal mass. Young stems may show reddish tones that contrast with the green foliage.
The cultivar is especially notable for its compact and densely leafy growth. In mature specimens, it can reach about 5–10 cm in height, while the stems can extend considerably horizontally or hang down.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Family: Crassulaceae.
‘Tornado’ is a horticultural cultivar of Sedum makinoi and, therefore, does not have its own natural distribution.
The species Sedum makinoi is native to Japan, specifically the islands of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. In the wild, it grows in rocky, relatively humid, and partially shaded places, especially in valleys. This origin is interesting because it explains why, unlike many xerophytic sedums from arid areas, it better tolerates some humidity during its active period, provided there is drainage.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone: 7b–10a (approximate).
It can withstand minimum temperatures down to -12°C. The species Sedum makinoi shows considerable cold resistance, although there is variability among clones. The RHS classifies ‘Tornado’ as H2, corresponding to plants that tolerate low temperatures but not necessarily prolonged freezing in British conditions.
Therefore, a distinction must be made between the cold resistance of the species and the specific behavior of the cultivar. In any case, the main risk during winter is not just the temperature, but the combination of cold, persistent humidity, and poor ventilation.
☀️ Lighting
Indicative DLI PAR: 12–20 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹.
It thrives with high light levels, from direct sun to bright partial shade. Good light intensity keeps the internodes short and favors the characteristic compact structure of the cultivar. The RHS recommends full sun.
Intense sun can also encourage reddish tones on the stems and certain leaves. Conversely, with insufficient light, the stems elongate, and the plant loses much of its compact appearance.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Opportunistic. It is a species with growth mainly active during seasons with moderate temperatures, although it can remain active for much of the year in mild climates.
During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly, then allowing the substrate to dry completely before watering again.
In winter, watering frequency should be reduced, especially in low temperatures. Although S. makinoi comes from environments that can be relatively humid, it does not tolerate permanent waterlogging well.
🌸 Flowering
Flowering occurs mainly in summer. The inflorescences appear on the stems and are formed by numerous small, star-shaped, yellow flowers.
Under cultivation conditions in Spain, flowering can be concentrated approximately between June and August, depending on temperature, lighting, and the start of the growth cycle.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied in moderation. An excess of nitrogen should be avoided, as it can promote growth that is too rapid and open, reducing the compact character that distinguishes ‘Tornado’.
