🔍 Morphology:
Tropical plant with a shrubby habit that develops, especially during its early years, a thickened, caudiciform stem base with corky bark and twisted branches. Over time, the caudex may become less prominent if the plant grows vigorously. Its leaves are oval, green, and arranged on horizontal branches. Its most distinctive feature is nyctinasty: the leaves fold up at night and reopen during the day.
📍 Distribution, habitat and family: It is native to Laos, Myanmar and Thailand, where it grows in tropical environments, including rocky areas. It belongs to the Phyllanthaceae family.
🌡️ USDA ZONE 11a. It can tolerate minimum temperatures close to +5 ºC only occasionally and in dry conditions; for safe cultivation, it should be kept above 10–12 ºC and protected from prolonged cold.
☀️ Lighting: It needs abundant light to maintain compact growth and promote the development of its thickened base. It can tolerate gentle sun if gradually acclimated, although it should be protected from intense sunlight through glass and from excessive heat. As a guideline, a PAR DLI of 15–20 moles of photons per day is recommended.
🌸 Flowering: It produces small, inconspicuous axillary flowers in greenish tones. Male and female flowers may appear on the same plant; the flowering is less striking than the caudex and the daily movement of the foliage.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Seasonal dormancy. During the growth phase, favored by warmth and good lighting, it is recommended to water when the substrate has partially dried out, without keeping it waterlogged. If it loses its leaves due to falling temperatures or reduced activity, watering should be spaced out. It should not be subjected to a cold and completely dry dormancy as if it were a desert succulent.
🚀 Nutrition: During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Succulents NPK (Ca-Mg) 3-1-5 (4-1) is recommended, with assimilable potassium and calcium, avoiding excess nitrogen.
