€10,60
🌱 Morphology
Globose cactus, generally solitary, although it can form small clusters with age. The body, yellowish-green to dark green, can reach 5–20 cm in diameter, with 15–21 ribs arranged in a spiral and divided into small tubercles. The areoles feature numerous white, thin, and flexible radial spines, accompanied by 3–4 reddish or brownish central spines, some of which are hooked. The most spectacular characteristic of ‘Sanguiniflora’ is its large, brilliant blood-red flowers, which contrast intensely with the light-colored spines.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
The name ‘Sanguiniflora’ corresponds to a traditional entity currently included within Parodia microsperma, whose natural range extends across southern Bolivia and northwestern Argentina, especially in Jujuy, Salta, Tucumán, Catamarca, and La Rioja. It inhabits mountain ranges and dry rocky areas, at altitudes of approximately 500 to 2,000 m. It belongs to Cactaceae, Cactoideae. Parodia sanguiniflora and P. microsperma subsp. sanguiniflora are names historically used for this form.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
Tolerates minimum temperatures down to −3 ºC when kept dry and if the specimens are well-acclimated. During cold spells, the substrate must be kept completely dry; excess winter humidity can cause root loss.
☀️ Lighting
Prefers plenty of light and gentle direct sun, with protection from the most intense sun during peak hours if grown in very hot climates. A DLI PAR of 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ promotes compact growth and good flowering.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. In winter, watering is greatly reduced and kept almost dry, although on exceptionally warm days it may need a small amount of water to avoid excessive root dehydration. In spring and summer, it should be watered abundantly but sparingly, allowing the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering.
🌸 Flowering
Can bloom from 2–3 years from seed under favorable conditions. Flowering occurs mainly from late spring to summer, and it can produce numerous successive flowers. The flowers, about 3–4 cm in size, stand out for their intense dark red color.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
