Parodia lenninghausii ‘Inermis’
🌱 Morphology
A cultivar of Parodia lenninghausii that is initially globose and later cylindrical in growth, which may form clumps with age. The body is green, with about 30–35 narrow and closely spaced ribs. The distinctive feature is its areoles, which are practically devoid of spines, covered by a small amount of white wool, standing out geometrically against the green body. Small bristles may occasionally appear, especially on flowering areoles.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
It is a horticultural selection of a species endemic to southern Brazil, mainly from Rio Grande do Sul, where the species grows on walls and rocky outcrops, in crevices and grasslands. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, Cactoideae subfamily, Notocacteae tribe. ‘Inermis’ does not constitute an independent botanical taxon, but rather a cultivated selection.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of up to −4 ºC if kept dry and properly acclimatized. During winter, it should be kept dry.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very intense lighting, with progressive adaptation to direct sun. As a general target during active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During active growth, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. In winter, it should remain dry and well-ventilated.
🌸 Flowering
The flowers are yellow to pale yellow and appear in the apical zone on woolly areoles. In this selection, the flowers provide a particularly marked contrast with the practically naked areoles.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot with substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
