🌱 Morphology
Compact horticultural hybrid that forms symmetrical rosettes up to 15–16 cm in diameter. Its leaves are very thick, fleshy, pointed, and smooth-surfaced, with a light layer of farina that gives them a powdery finish. The usual coloration is sea green or pastel blue-green; when light increases and temperatures moderately drop, it can develop reddish, coppery, brown, and purple tones. It produces offsets that allow dense clumps to form over time. The combination of robust leaves and changing colors is its main ornamental appeal.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Horticultural cultivar of Australian origin, attributed to hybridizer Jocelyn Ainsworth, from Darkes Forest, New South Wales. It has no natural distribution of its own, and its exact genealogy is not documented. The name also appears as ×Pachyveria ‘Ruth’, considered a synonym in specialized sources. Crassulaceae family, ×Pachyveria notogenus, which groups hybrids between Pachyphytum and Echeveria.
❄️ Temperature
USDA 10a (−1.1 °C) as a general reference, not as a guarantee of resistance. It is recommended to protect it from frost and damp cold. Although it can tolerate occasional drops close to 0 °C in dry conditions, it should not be exposed to intense or prolonged frost.
☀️ Lighting
Full sun, with gradual acclimatization. Indicative PAR DLI of 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹. Abundant lighting promotes compact growth and accentuates the reddish and purple tones. In summer, especially during Madrid heatwaves, it is advisable to protect it from the most scorching sun. It is recommended to avoid touching the leaves to preserve the farina.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Opportunistic. During active growth, it is recommended to water thoroughly and let the substrate dry out completely before the next watering. In winter, the frequency will be adjusted to the temperature and drying speed, avoiding having the roots remain damp for prolonged periods. Good drainage and ventilation help prevent rot.
🌸 Flowering
In spring it can produce arched flower stems with bell-shaped flowers in reddish tones.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering. During winter dormancy, fertilization is not recommended.
This is an inimitable xerophyte cultivated in Madrid in a technological square pot and with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
