Opuntia jamaicensis Britton & Harris
🌱 Morphology
A shrubby and relatively compact Opuntia, generally less than 1 m tall, and highly branched. The cladodes are spatulate, narrow at the base, oval to elongated, about 7–13 cm long and 5–7.5 cm wide, green to grayish-green with a glossy surface. The areoles are oval and quite spaced apart, with usually 1–2 spines, exceptionally up to 5, white or grayish, spreading and up to 2.5 cm long. The flowers are sulfur-yellow, up to 4–5 cm, and the fruits, characteristically pyriform, red, and 3.5–4 cm long, are covered in glochids. Its morphology distinguishes it from O. tuna and the recently described O. kingstoniana.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is endemic to Jamaica, especially in the parishes of St. Catherine and Manchester. It lives practically at sea level, between 0 and 8 m, on saline soils, in coastal plains, salt marshes, and areas near mangroves and scrubland. It can form dense populations on terrain subject to drought, heat, and high salinity. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, Opuntioideae subfamily, and Opuntieae tribe. Lodé maintains Opuntia jamaicensis as a species of the genus Opuntia; his 2026 index expressly includes it among recognized species.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 10a
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −1 ºC when kept dry and if the specimens are well acclimated. Although it can withstand brief frosts, its tropical origin advises special caution with prolonged cold, humidity, and wet substrate.
☀️ Lighting
It requires direct sun and very intense light. During active growth, a DLI PAR of approximately 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended, with progressive acclimatization if it comes from protected conditions. Intense sun keeps the cladodes compact and encourages abundant flowering.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. In Madrid, it is recommended to keep it practically dry during the cold period. With rising temperatures, resume abundant and spaced watering, allowing the substrate to dry completely between applications. It is highly drought-tolerant during the warm season, but the combination of cold and moisture should be avoided.
🌸 Flowering
It can begin to flower at approximately 3 years of age, although the age depends on the size and method of propagation. The yellow flowers appear on the upper edges of the cladodes and develop mainly between May and August. They are short-lived but successive flowers, renewing themselves for several weeks; therefore, it can be considered long-flowering within a single season. Afterward, it produces red pyriform fruits, which are edible although little appreciated for their flavor.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae NPK (Ca-Mg) 4-4-7 (4-4) is recommended. Assimilable calcium promotes the formation of firm tissues and the maintenance of turgidity, while magnesium participates in chlorophyll synthesis.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot with substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
