Notocactus uebelmannianus Buining
🌱 Morphology
Solitary cactus, rarely branching from the base, with a globose and depressed body that can become somewhat more cylindrical with age. It reaches approximately 12 cm in height and up to 17 cm in diameter, with a dark green, glossy epidermis. It has 12–16 wide, rounded, and strongly tuberculate ribs, whose protrusions project laterally with the appearance of small chins. The areoles, initially covered with white wool, later become bare. The spines are generally thin, flexible, and appressed to the body: about 6 radial ones, whitish or grayish, up to 3 cm long, often with one pointing downward. The central spine is usually absent or not clearly differentiated.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, especially in the Caçapava do Sul and Guaritas region. It grows on flat rocky terrain and outcrops within open landscapes of the Pampas region. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, Cactoideae subfamily, and Notocacteae tribe.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −4 ºC in dry conditions and with well-acclimated specimens. During winter, it is recommended to keep it dry and avoid the combination of low temperatures and persistent humidity.
☀️ Lighting
It needs intense lighting to maintain its compact habit and promote abundant flowering. It can be grown in full sun after progressive acclimatization, although in very hot climates it may appreciate light protection during the central hours of the day. As a guideline during active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During the cold months, watering is significantly reduced and the substrate is kept dry. From spring until the end of summer, it can be watered abundantly, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. It is slightly more water-demanding during the active period than many cacti, but drainage must be excellent to avoid root problems.
🌸 Flowering
This is one of its most spectacular features. It produces apical flowers about 5 cm in diameter, bright and silky, in shades ranging from red wine and magenta to intense violet. The flowers appear forming a striking ring around the apex and contrast sharply with the dark green epidermis. The stigma is reddish and the stamens provide a golden center. In cultivation, it can begin to bloom relatively young.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low levels of nitrogen is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot and with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
