Notocactus horstii F.Ritter
🌱 Morphology
More from Brazil... Solitary or occasionally clustering cactus, with a globose to short-cylindrical green body that can reach about 30 cm in height and 14 cm in diameter. It features 12–19 well-defined, relatively high ribs with woolly areoles. It develops 1–6 needle-like central spines that are straight, curved, or twisted, up to about 3 cm long, ranging in color from yellow to reddish-brown. The radial spines are more numerous and finer, generally light in color, creating a delicate contrast with the body.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Native to southern Brazil, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, especially in the surroundings of the Serra Geral, where it grows on rocky outcrops within the landscape of subtropical fields and prairies. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, Cactoideae subfamily, and Notocacteae tribe.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −4 ºC when kept dry and with well-acclimated specimens. Winter should be especially bright with the substrate completely dry.
☀️ Lighting
Requires very intense light and several hours of direct sun, with progressive adaptation. As a guideline during active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During spring and summer, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before watering again. In winter, it should be kept practically dry.
🌸 Flowering
The flowers appear in the apical area and can display shades ranging from yellow to orange-yellow; there are also selected forms with purple flowers, such as the traditional f. purpureus. They are diurnal flowers and have a striking appearance relative to the size of the body.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cacti, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
