🌱 Morphology
Solitary cactus, globose to strongly depressed body, grayish-green or glaucous in color, reaching approximately 8 cm in height and 12 cm in diameter. It has about 16 straight, thin, and very sharp ribs, between which small laminar tubercles form, giving the surface a characteristic serrated appearance. The areoles are partially sunken between these ridges. It develops 3–4 rigid, straight central spines up to 3 cm long, light yellow with a dark brown base, accompanied by 2–3 similar but slightly smaller radial ones.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is distributed throughout Rio Grande do Sul, in southern Brazil, and northern Uruguay, mainly in the Pampa biome. It inhabits rocky outcrops and stony soils, even near small watercourses, in environments where there is seasonal moisture availability but rapid drainage. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, Cactoideae subfamily, and Notocacteae tribe.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −4 ºC in dry conditions and with well-acclimated specimens. For safe cultivation during winter, it is advisable to keep it dry and protected from the combination of cold and persistent humidity. Some cultivation references place its resistance at around −2 ºC.
☀️ Lighting
It requires intense lighting, although in very hot climates it may appreciate light protection during the hours of peak radiation. As a general guide during active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During the cold months, watering is significantly reduced and the substrate is kept dry. With the rise in temperatures, watering is resumed abundantly, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. Although it comes from a Pampean environment with some humidity, pot cultivation requires a very well-draining and aerated substrate, especially during the cold period.
🌸 Flowering
It produces large yellow flowers, up to about 7 cm in length and 8 cm in diameter, which open during the day. The floral areoles are covered in light to dark brown wool. The fruits can reach about 3 cm and take on orange or violet hues as they ripen. Natural flowering is concentrated mainly between October and December in the Southern Hemisphere.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with high levels of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae, is recommended, applied once a month during watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
