🌱 Morphology
Arborescent cactus, relatively fast-growing under favorable conditions, which can reach about 4–5 m in height. It forms a short trunk and numerous ascending branches, bluish-green or glaucous in color, generally 6–10 cm in diameter. It has 5–7 low, rounded ribs with spaced areoles. The spines are short on young branches, with 5–9 grayish radial ones and one much more robust central spine, up to 7 cm, initially dark. With age, it develops a very characteristic tree-like silhouette.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to Mexico, widely distributed throughout arid and semi-arid regions in the center of the country. It mainly inhabits xerophilous scrubland and tropical deciduous forest on rocky terrain and, in certain areas, limestone or gypseous soils. It is found at approximately 900 to 2,100 m above sea level. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, Cactoideae subfamily, Echinocereeae tribe.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
Tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −4 ºC when kept dry and well-acclimated. Young specimens are more sensitive to cold and prolonged humidity.
☀️ Lighting
Requires very intense lighting and several hours of direct sun, with progressive acclimation. Bright exposure promotes the bluish coloration of the stems. As a general guide during active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During spring and summer, it is recommended to water abundantly and let the substrate dry completely before the next watering. In winter, it should be kept practically dry, especially at low temperatures.
🌸 Flowering
The flowers are cream or greenish-white, approximately 2–3.5 cm in diameter, and appear laterally on the areoles during the warm season. After flowering, it develops globose, dark red, purple, or bluish fruits, about 1–2 cm, known in Mexico as garambullos and prized for their juicy pulp.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
