🔍 Morphology
A caudiciform succulent from the Aizoaceae family, with a shrubby, highly branched habit that can reach 60–70 cm in height. Its main attraction is the thickened, twisted tuberous root, with smooth bark in reddish tones, forming a sculptural structure resembling the trunk of a small tree. The stems bear narrow, fleshy, triangular leaves with a finely granular surface and slightly curved tips. Its flowers, resembling small daisies, are yellow, orange, or reddish.
📍 Distribution and habitat
Native to South Africa, especially the Eastern Cape province, with its distribution also described in the Little Karoo; some sources extend its presence to southern Namibia. It grows in scrublands and alluvial soils of arid regions.
Aizoaceae family. It is classified as Least Concern (LC) in the South African succulent identification guide.
🌡️ Temperature
USDA Zone 10a. Tolerates minimum temperatures close to −5 °C for short periods if the substrate is completely dry; this tolerance is indicative and does not guarantee that it will withstand prolonged frosts. Protect the tuberous root especially from the combination of moisture and cold.
☀️ Lighting
Needs plenty of light, from soft sunlight to full sun exposure after gradual acclimatization. High light levels promote compact growth and flowering. As a reference, a PAR DLI of 20–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended, adjusting heat exposure and ventilation.
🌸 Flowering
Produces small daisy-like flowers, generally yellow, orange, or reddish, at the ends of the branches. In its native hemisphere, flowering can last from spring to autumn; in Madrid, the timing will depend on growing conditions.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Grows mainly in spring, summer, and autumn. Water moderately during the active period, soaking the substrate and allowing it to dry out completely before the next watering. In winter, keep it almost dry and reduce watering even further if temperatures drop. Waterlogging can cause the tuberous root to rot.
🚀 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Aizoaceae NPK (Ca-Mg) 6-5-15 (3-3) is recommended, with high levels of assimilable calcium and potassium. Calcium contributes to the formation of firm tissues and the maintenance of turgidity; potassium promotes water balance. Avoid excessive nitrogen inputs.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a high-tech square pot with mycorrhizal fungi-enriched substrate.
Gourmet black pot measuring 14 × 17 cm.
