Mammillaria lasiacantha Engelm.
šµ Morphology
Small Mammillaria with a depressed-globose to short-cylindrical body, usually solitary and partially buried, about 2ā3.5 cm in diameter. The tubercles are small and the axils lack wool. It does not develop central spines: each areole is covered by numerous very fine, white or slightly pinkish radial spines, arranged in several series and sometimes feathery, giving it the appearance of a delicate mesh.
š Distribution, habitat and family
Family Cactaceae, subfamily Cactoideae, tribe Cacteae. It is distributed from New Mexico and Texas to northern and central Mexico. It inhabits the Chihuahuan Desert, especially stony slopes, rocky hills, and gravelly soils, frequently on limestone, at an altitude between 500 and 2,100 m.
āļø Temperature
USDA 8b. It tolerates minimum temperatures down to ā9.4 ĀŗC if it remains completely dry and is well acclimated. In cultivation, damp cold is much more dangerous than a dry frost.
āļø Lighting
It needs plenty of light to maintain its compact growth and develop its characteristic abundant spination. Full sun is recommended after progressive acclimatization, with an approximate DLI PAR of 18ā30 mol/m²/day.
š§ Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During active growth, it is recommended to water thoroughly and allow the substrate to dry completely before watering again. In winter, it is kept practically dry, especially when temperatures drop.
šø Flowering
It blooms mainly between January and March, forming a crown of small flowers around the apex. They are white or cream, with a characteristic central band that can be green, yellow, pink, purple, reddish, or brownish-red. It produces scarlet, cylindrical or club-shaped fruits that ripen during the summer.Ā
šæ Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low levels of nitrogen is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® CactÔceas, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
