Mammillaria haageana subsp. san-angelensis (Sánchez-Mej.) D.R.Hunt
🌱 Morphology
Small globose cactus, 6–12 cm tall and 4–7 cm in diameter, with a slightly sunken apex densely covered in wool and spines. It features 13–21 spiral rows of conical tubercles, each with about 18–20 radial spines and usually 2 central spines. The roots are shallow and highly branched. Its flowers emerge at the base of the tubercles, forming a spectacular crown around the apex.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is an extremely localized form from the Pedregal de San Ángel in Mexico City, associated with the basaltic flows of the ancient Xitle volcano. It used to grow between rock crevices and in xerophilous scrubland, in an open landscape where volcanic stone, sunlight, and seasonal water scarcity selected for a small, extraordinarily specialized plant. It belongs to the Cactaceae family. It is currently considered extinct in the wild and survives thanks to conservation and propagation programs.
Taxonomic note: Mammillaria haageana subsp. san-angelensis is also treated as Mammillaria san-angelensis. Kew considers it a synonym of M. haageana, while recent studies continue to use the subspecific combination to investigate its characteristics. For the Desert CITY collection, the indicated designation is maintained.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9a
Tolerates minimum temperatures down to −5 ºC when kept dry and with well-acclimated specimens. During winter, it must remain completely dry.
☀️ Lighting
It requires plenty of light and several hours of direct sun to maintain compact growth and encourage flowering. A PAR DLI of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended during active growth, with progressive acclimation to intense sun.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. Keep completely dry during the cold months. In spring and summer, water deeply and allow the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. The model of its volcanic habitat suggests a highly draining substrate and excellent ventilation, specifically avoiding water retention around the root collar.
🌸 Flowering
Blooms at approximately 4 years of age, when it reaches maturity. The flowers are campanulate, pink to pinkish-purple, and appear forming a crown around the top of the plant. Each floral areole produces one flower; subsequently, red fruits appear, with up to about 20 seeds per fruit.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
