€26,50
🌱 Morphology
A slow-growing Mammillaria, initially solitary, which produces numerous offsets with age and can form large, compact colonies. The stems are globose, short cylindrical, or somewhat club-shaped, bluish-green to grayish-green in color, reaching up to 18 cm in height and 8 cm in diameter. The tubercles are rounded and the axils feature white wool, especially abundant in the upper part. Each areole develops 16–20 white radial spines, fine, about 5–7 mm long, and typically 2–4 more robust central spines, although there can be up to six; they are white, frequently with brownish tips, and the uppermost one can reach 4 cm, protruding clearly from the crown of spines. The epithet geminispina, "twin-spined," alludes to the two central spines that typically characterize the species. This clone has shorter spines.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Native to northeastern and central Mexico, mainly from Hidalgo, Querétaro, and San Luis Potosí, with records also extending toward Guanajuato and Veracruz. It lives at approximately 1,000 to 1,850 m, in xerophytic scrubland on rocky slopes and calcareous soils, forming colonies that can build up into large mounds.
Family Cactaceae · Subfamily Cactoideae · Tribe Cacteae
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
Tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −4 ºC for brief periods and with the substrate completely dry. Cold accompanied by humidity should be avoided.
☀️ Lighting
Needs direct sun to develop dense spination and maintain the characteristic white appearance of mature colonies. A gradual adaptation to the sun is recommended when coming from sheltered conditions. As a reference, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is adequate during active growth.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During active growth, it is recommended to water deeply and allow the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering. In autumn, watering should be gradually reduced until the plant is kept dry throughout the winter. Drainage must be excellent.
🌸 Flowering
The flowers appear forming the characteristic crown around the apex, although often only a few open simultaneously, creating incomplete crowns. They are deep pink to carmine in color, with a darker center, and reach approximately 1.5–2 cm. Flowering can occur in spring and extend through summer, depending on growing conditions. A first flowering has been documented at approximately 7–8 years from seed.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae NPK (Ca-Mg) 4-4-7 (4-4) is recommended once a month along with watering. Assimilable calcium promotes the formation of firm tissues and the maintenance of turgidity, while magnesium participates in chlorophyll synthesis. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
