🌱 Morphology
A very low-growing cactus, densely caespitose, forming clusters up to about 30 cm in diameter. The stems are cylindrical, soft, and fragile, light green in color, about 4–6 cm long, although they can elongate with age. They have 6–9 low ribs, with small, closely spaced areoles, provided with 10–15 very short radial spines, approximately 1–2 mm long, soft and white or brownish in color. The stems detach easily, which facilitates its vegetative propagation.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
A species from northwestern Argentina, especially related to the provinces of Tucumán, Salta, and Catamarca. It develops on mountain slopes, in mountain scrubland, and in mountain meadows, at an altitude of approximately 750 to 1600 m, growing among vegetation and in soils poor in organic matter. It belongs to the Cactaceae family. The exact location of its current natural populations remains little known, as expeditions following its description had difficulty finding it again.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 7b–11b
Tolerates minimum temperatures down to −14 ºC if kept completely dry and well acclimated. Its cold resistance allows it to be grown outdoors in many temperate areas, although the combination of low temperatures and prolonged humidity can cause rot.
☀️ Lighting
During active growth, it requires high lighting, with an approximate target of 18–25 mol/m²/day DLI PAR. It tolerates direct sun if progressively acclimated, although in the most intense summer conditions it can develop correctly with slight protection during the central hours of the day.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Winter rest. Growth is concentrated during spring and summer. During this period, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering. In autumn, water supply is progressively reduced, and it is kept practically dry during winter. The stems, being relatively soft and small in diameter, respond particularly poorly to sustained excess humidity.
🌸 Flowering
Produces numerous diurnal flowers, large in relation to the plant's size, infundibuliform in shape and scarlet red to orange-red in color, which can reach about 7 cm in length. They appear laterally on the stems, mainly between May and July in Madrid. The fruits are small, approximately 7 mm, dull red to dark mauve in color.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with high assimilable calcium content and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
