🌱 Morphology
Generally a solitary cactus, although it may form small clusters with age. The body is depressed-globose, dark green to grayish-green, and can reach about 20 cm in diameter. It has 13–18 ribs with a sharp profile, deeply divided into angular tubercles that give it a very characteristic appearance. The grayish areoles are located in the indentations between the tubercles. It develops 9–11 radial spines, generally arranged in a comb shape, up to 1 cm long, and 1–3 more robust central spines, 2–5 cm long, usually curved outwards.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
It is distributed throughout Bolivia, especially in the departments of Cochabamba, Chuquisaca, Santa Cruz and Tarija, in inter-Andean valleys and xerophytic vegetation zones. It is found at altitudes of approximately 1,900 to 3,200 m, growing on rocky terrain and dry slopes. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, Cactoideae subfamily, Cereeae tribe. In Joël Lodé’s taxonomy, the CORRECT name is Lobivia obrepanda; Echinopsis obrepanda is the name used by other classifications.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 8b–11b
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −9 ºC in specimens that are dry, acclimatized, and protected from humidity. Its mountainous distribution allows it to withstand significant nocturnal drops in temperature.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very intense lighting and several hours of direct sun to keep the body compact, define the ribs, and promote balanced spination. As a guideline during active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During spring and summer, it is recommended to water deeply once the substrate has dried out completely. In autumn, watering is progressively reduced until the plant is kept dry throughout the winter.
🌸 Flowering
It produces large and spectacular flowers, approximately 10–20 cm in length, which emerge laterally near the apex. They can be white, pink, or carmine red, with a slightly curved floral tube. Some forms have fragrant flowers. Their size, which is much larger than the body, produces the characteristic effect of a floral crown around the plant.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
