🌱 Morphology
A cactus with a hymen... A small, slow-growing cactus, generally solitary, although it may form clusters with age. The stem is globose or ovoid at first and tends to elongate later, reaching about 5–7 cm in diameter. The epidermis varies from grayish-green to dark green, and the apex, slightly depressed, is covered in whitish wool. It has 10–14 compressed ribs, divided into slanted tubercles that produce a characteristic wavy pattern. The areoles, grayish or whitish, develop up to about 10 short radial spines and 1–3 central ones that are much more robust, dark, and frequently reddish; the upper one can be hooked and reach 4–6 cm.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to northwestern Argentina, especially Jujuy, where it grows at an altitude of approximately 3000 to 4000 m, among shrubs and grasslands on rocky slopes and highly exposed mountain environments. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, Cactoideae subfamily, and Trichocereeae tribe. The old name Lobivia jajoana is one of its historical synonyms.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 8b–11b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −9 ºC in dry and well-acclimated specimens. During cold spells, it must be kept completely dry, especially if temperatures remain low for several days.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very intense lighting and can be grown in full sun after proper acclimatization. As a target guideline during active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. Its growth is concentrated mainly in spring and summer. During this period, it is recommended to water deeply and allow the substrate to dry completely before watering again. In late autumn, water supply is progressively reduced until it is kept dry throughout the winter.
🌸 Flowering
It produces large lateral flowers up to about 7 cm in diameter and an extraordinary variety of colors, from yellow and orange to tomato red, wine red, and purple tones. Its most distinctive feature is the very dark purple, almost black, floral throat and a halo surrounding the base of the stamens that is iridescent black, called the "Hymen". Its function is to attract pollinators and change color once the flower has been pollinated. The stamens are purple and the anthers are yellow.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
