It inhabits a region where the most frequent rains occur in winter. The species Haworthiopsis scabra is one of the four representatives of the Trifariae Section, which is one of the seven sections described in the publication by Gildenhuys & Klopper (2016) on its taxonomy. It belongs to the Alooideae tribe within the Asphodelaceae family.
