š± Morphology
A little botanical jewel in which the epidermis seems to have been hand-drawn. It forms a compact rosette of thick, rigid, upright, and pointed leaves, ranging from intense green to dark green, which can take on pinkish or bronzed tones in high light. What is truly extraordinary are its ring-shaped white tubercles, perfectly recognizable and responsible for the name āDonutsā. These small white circles stand out against the green background of the leaves and can appear on both leaf surfaces. It is a very slow-growing selection of great interest to collectors.
š Distribution, habitat, and family
āDonutsā is a horticultural cultivar of undocumented origin, so no specific natural locality should be attributed to it. Its species, Tulista pumila, is endemic to the Western Cape, South Africa, mainly the Worcester-Robertson Karoo, extending towards Matjiesfontein and other inland areas. It lives in Karoo and xerophytic scrub environments, in a region with predominantly winter rainfall. It belongs to the Asphodelaceae family, subfamily Asphodeloideae.
āļø Temperature
USDA 10a. It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to ā2 ĀŗC. When grown in pots, it is recommended to avoid prolonged periods of cold with damp substrate, although the species withstands light frosts in its natural habitat.
āļø Lighting
Partial shade. It needs plenty of light to maintain a compact rosette and achieve a sharp contrast between the leaves and the characteristic white rings. Intense light is recommended, with progressive adaptation to direct sun. DLI PAR: 12ā20 mol/m²/day during active growth.
š§ Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. Tulista pumila lives in an area with predominantly winter rainfall: the first rains usually arrive in autumn and the greatest water availability is concentrated during the cool months. Summer is hot and dry, so vegetative activity decreases. It is recommended to water during the active period, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings, and to space out waterings significantly during the summer. SANBI places the annual precipitation of its area between approximately 150 and 350 mm, depending on the location.
šø Flowering
The flowering maintains the species pattern: a branched inflorescence of up to about 40 cm, with small waxy flowers in brownish-white tones and greenish veins. It occurs mainly at the beginning of summer. No specific age for the first flowering of the āDonutsā cultivar has been published.
šæ Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICEĀ® Aloes, Haworthias & Co. is recommended, with a high content of potassium and bioavailable calcium. It is applied with irrigation, reducing or suspending fertilization during summer dormancy.
9x9 cm gourmet black pot
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a high-tech square pot with substrate activated by mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
