€21,20
🌱 Morphology
Small, slow-growing, usually solitary Gymnocalycium with a globose-flattened body, with a dark green, grayish-green, or green epidermis with intense brownish-purple tones. It can reach approximately 6–12 cm in diameter. It has 9–14 relatively narrow, high, and well-defined ribs, with lighter transverse bands that produce the characteristic geometric pattern of this provenance. The areoles are small, whitish, and pubescent. In LB 2178 material, the purple coloration intensifies with high lighting and contrasted temperatures.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
The taxon originates from the Chaco of Paraguay and eastern Bolivia. The material marketed as ‘Agua Dulce’ LB 2178 comes specifically from Agua Dulce, Alto Paraguay, Paraguay, where Ludwig Bercht collected it in 2000. It is a low-altitude area, approximately between 10 and 500 m, with a warm and seasonal climate, featuring Chaco vegetation and clay soils. LB 2178 is a field number and not a breeder's cultivar.
Family Cactaceae · Subfamily Cactoideae · Tribe Cereeae ·
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −4 ºC for short periods and with the substrate completely dry. Coming from a warm, low-altitude environment, it is advisable to protect it especially from the combination of cold and humidity.
☀️ Lighting
It needs plenty of light to maintain the contrasted bands and the green, violet, and brown tones of the epidermis. Soft direct sun or very bright semi-shade is recommended, avoiding sudden exposure to intense sun during the central hours of summer. PAR radiation of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ (DLI) favors compact coloration and good flowering.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Winter rest. Growth is concentrated during the warm months. During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. In autumn, inputs are progressively reduced until it is kept dry throughout the winter.
🌸 Flowering
It produces large flowers in relation to its small body, white in color, sometimes with pinkish or brownish tones towards the exterior, up to about 5 cm, which may open incompletely. Flowering occurs mainly from mid-summer to autumn. Adult plants can emit several flowers during the favorable season.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas NPK (Ca-Mg) 4-4-7 (4-4) is recommended once a month along with irrigation. Assimilable calcium promotes the formation of firm tissues and the maintenance of turgidity, while magnesium participates in chlorophyll synthesis. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
