Gymnocalycium bodenbenderianum var. triacanthum | Three-spined Gymnocalycium
€10,60
🌱 Morphology
Small, slow-growing Gymnocalycium with a globose to slightly cylindrical body, widest at the middle, with an epidermis that can vary from brownish-green to ash-gray. It reaches approximately 6–8 cm in diameter. It features about 12 low and relatively flat ribs, divided by small transverse furrows into discrete bumps. The areoles, initially somewhat woolly, are quite far apart. Its most striking feature is the extremely reduced spination: it usually develops only 3 radial spines, rarely 5, which are short —up to about 10 mm—, robust, horn-gray in color, and slightly recurved toward the body; it lacks central spines.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
The form traditionally known as triacanthum comes from Argentina, especially from the Sierra de Ancasti, in Catamarca, with historical references also to Córdoba and La Rioja. It grows in dry, stony environments where its small body can remain partially protected by vegetation and the substrate. The name Gymnocalycium triacanthum was published by Backeberg in 1959, but it is considered not validly published and is currently included within the variability of G. bodenbenderianum. Joël Lodé does not recognize it as an independent species either.
Family Cactaceae · Subfamily Cactoideae · Tribe Cereeae
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 8a
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −10 ºC for brief periods and with the substrate completely dry. Its resistance is favored by the dry climate of its area of origin, but persistent humidity during cold episodes must be avoided.
☀️ Lighting
It requires plenty of light, although in summer it appreciates filtered sun or bright partial shade, especially during the middle of the day. Insufficient lighting can significantly reduce flowering, while very intense exposure can produce brown or reddish tones in the epidermis. A PAR radiation of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ (DLI) is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During active growth, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. In autumn, inputs are progressively reduced until it is kept dry throughout the winter. The combination of cold and humidity should be especially avoided.
🌸 Flowering
It produces relatively large flowers for the small size of its body, approximately 3.5 cm in length, with white petals and a narrow floral tube of about 2.2 cm, the base of which may have a slight curvature. The outer sepals are olive-green, and the flowers appear near the apex. In cultivation, it can begin to bloom at approximately 3–4 years of age and produce multiple flowerings during the season, mainly between May and September.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas NPK (Ca-Mg) 4-4-7 (4-4) is recommended once a month along with watering. Assimilable calcium promotes the formation of firm tissues and the maintenance of turgidity, while magnesium participates in chlorophyll synthesis. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
