🌱 Morphology
Horticultural selection of Gymnocalycium of undetermined species, characterized by the absence or strong reduction of spines. The body is globose to flattened, compact and green, with ribs divided into rounded tubercles and small areoles that may retain slight pubescence. The absence of spines leaves the epidermis and the relief of the ribs completely visible, providing an extraordinarily clean and sculptural appearance. The spineless or inermis trait may be expressed with varying intensity depending on the clone and growing conditions. It should not be confused with a specific botanical species: there are different commercial selections of spineless Gymnocalycium.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
As it is a cultivar or horticultural selection of undocumented origin and parent species, it is not possible to rigorously attribute a specific natural distribution to it. The genus Gymnocalycium extends throughout Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia, Uruguay and Brazil, mainly occupying grassland, xerophilous scrub and rocky outcrop environments. The absence of spines is an exceptional trait within the genus, although it can appear naturally or as a mutation in different lineages.
Cactaceae Family · Cactoideae Subfamily · Cereeae Tribe
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −4 ºC for brief periods and with the substrate completely dry. As the parent species is not known with certainty, greater caution is recommended than with a correctly identified wild species.
☀️ Lighting
Bright semi-shade is recommended, with PAR radiation greater than 20 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹. Gradual lighting maintains compact growth and allows the relief of the ribs to be better appreciated. Sudden changes from shaded conditions to intense sun should be avoided.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Winter dormancy. During active growth, it is recommended to water deeply and allow the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering. In autumn, waterings are progressively reduced, and it is kept dry or practically dry during winter.
🌸 Flowering
Spineless Gymnocalyciums can produce flowers that are relatively large in relation to the body, generally in shades of white, pink or pink-violet, depending on the genetic origin of the selection. Flowering occurs mainly from late spring to summer and, in well-cultivated adult plants, can be repeated in several waves during the season. No age for first flowering is established because the specific identity of this cultivar is not sufficiently documented.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae NPK (Ca-Mg) 4-4-7 (4-4) is recommended once a month along with irrigation. Assimilable calcium favors the formation of firm tissues and the maintenance of turgidity, while magnesium participates in chlorophyll synthesis. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
