Gymnocalycium robustum-campestre Fr. SP de Toyos
🌱 Morphology
A slow-growing, solitary cactus with a flattened-globose body, grayish-green, gray, or even slightly purplish in color, reaching approximately 8–11 cm in diameter and 3–5 cm in height. It features 9–11 wide, low, and blunt ribs, deeply marked by transverse grooves that form small chins below the areoles. The spines are relatively short but rigid: typically 5–7 radial spines, up to 1.5 cm long, with one directed downwards and the rest to the sides; it does not develop a central spine. When dry, they are almost white, while with humidity, they acquire yellowish tones with brownish bases and tips.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
The SP de Toyos reference comes from San Pedro de Toyos, Córdoba province, Argentina, where there are populations attributed to G. robustum. It grows in dry, stony terrain on granitic rocks at an altitude of approximately 300 to 700 m. The locality is especially interesting because plants from this area show intermediate characteristics and cannot always be unequivocally assigned to G. robustum or G. campestre. Therefore, the name robustum-campestre is particularly appropriate for identifying this specific provenance.
Family Cactaceae · Subfamily Cactoideae · Tribe Cereeae · Genus Gymnocalycium · Species Gymnocalycium robustum R.Kiesling, O.Ferrari & Metzing · Population SP de Toyos.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 8a
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −10 ºC for brief periods and with the substrate completely dry. Its Cordovan origin, at low altitude, should not be confused with the resistance of other mountain Gymnocalycium.
☀️ Lighting
High brightness is recommended, with soft direct sun or bright semi-shade. In Madrid, it is advisable to protect it from the most intense sun during the central hours of summer. As a reference, a DLI PAR greater than 20 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ promotes compact growth and good epidermis coloration.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. Growth is concentrated mainly from spring to early autumn. During active growth, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. In autumn, water is progressively reduced until it is kept dry throughout the winter.
🌸 Flowering
The flowers are large in relation to the body, white, broadly funnel-shaped with a pink throat, up to about 6 cm in length and diameter. Flowering occurs mainly during spring and summer. No reliable and specific age for the first flowering of this provenance has been found, so establishing an undocumented figure is avoided.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas NPK (Ca-Mg) 4-4-7 (4-4) is recommended once a month along with watering. Assimilable calcium promotes the formation of firm tissues and the maintenance of turgidity, while magnesium participates in chlorophyll synthesis. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
