🌱 Morphology
Small globular cactus, depressed or briefly cylindrical, with relatively fast growth, reaching approximately 8–10 cm in diameter and up to 10 cm in height. The body is light green, dark green, or brownish-green, often decorated with lighter and darker horizontal bands that give it a very characteristic appearance. It has up to about 10 ribs, wide and marked by transverse furrows that form prominent tubercles. The areoles produce several fine radial spines, generally whitish to brownish, and occasionally one central spine. It can remain solitary or produce numerous offsets, eventually forming large colonies.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Its currently recognized area is mainly located in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, although specialized literature has documented related populations in Bolivia and Paraguay. It grows in open areas and seasonally dry forests, typically between 200 and 900 m in altitude, partially protected by low shrubs that filter solar radiation. The substrate is usually sandy or sandy-loam and experiences summer rains.
Family Cactaceae · Subfamily Cactoideae · Tribe Trichocereeae
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −5 ºC for brief periods and with the substrate completely dry. Although it can withstand light frosts when dry, in cultivation it is much safer to avoid the combination of low temperatures and humidity.
☀️ Lighting
It needs plenty of light, but in its habitat it grows partially protected by low vegetation. Soft sun, filtered light, or bright semi-shade is recommended, especially during the central hours of summer. Excessively intense exposure can tan or redden the epidermis and cause burns. A PAR radiation of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ (DLI) is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During active growth, it is recommended to water abundantly and let the substrate dry out completely before the next watering. In autumn, water intake is progressively reduced until it is kept dry during the winter. It is particularly sensitive to rot when it remains damp at low temperatures.
🌸 Flowering
It is one of the most generously flowering Gymnocalycium. The flowers appear near the apex, are funnel-shaped, white to pale pink, occasionally with more intense pink tones, and can reach approximately 6 cm in length and 5 cm in diameter, being enormous in proportion to the body. Flowering usually begins in spring and continues throughout the summer, with the ability to produce several flushes of flowers and, under favorable conditions, even extend beyond the usual season. It is considered an easy-flowering species and can flower while relatively young. No reliable or specific age for the first flowering has been found.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas NPK (Ca-Mg) 4-4-7 (4-4) is recommended once a month along with watering. Assimilable calcium promotes the formation of firm tissues and the maintenance of turgidity, while magnesium participates in chlorophyll synthesis. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
