Gymnocalycium anisitsii var. anisitsii (K.Schum.) Britton & Rose
🌱 Morphology
Solitary or slowly clumping cactus, with a globose-flattened body that can become shortly cylindrical, light green and capable of acquiring reddish, purplish, or bronze tones when it receives more radiation. It has 8–11 marked ribs, divided into prominent tubercles resembling small “buttons” with transverse grooves. The areoles typically produce 5–7 radial spines, fine, tortuous, and white, yellowish, or brown in color, which become grayish with age; it generally lacks a central spine. It can reach about 8–15 cm in diameter.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
This is the nominal form of a species native to the eastern Chaco, distributed in Paraguay, especially in the surroundings of Concepción and the Paraguay River basin, extending to nearby sectors of Brazil and Bolivia. It grows in open xerophilous scrubland, among low vegetation that provides light shade and filters solar radiation; it usually appears at low altitude, approximately between 70 and 400 m.
Family Cactaceae · Subfamily Cactoideae · Tribe Cereeae
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of up to −4 ºC for brief periods and with the substrate completely dry. Its subtropical and low-altitude origin makes it advisable to protect it from prolonged frosts.
☀️ Lighting
We recommend bright partial shade or an exposure that provides a PAR radiation higher than 20 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹. Intense light can cause reddish or bronze tones, but it is best to avoid the scorching sun of the central hours during the summer.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During active growth, it is recommended to water deeply and only do so again when the substrate has dried out completely. Watering should be reduced progressively in autumn and suspended during the cold period. In protected cultivation, it can remain active for much of the warm season.
🌸 Flowering
It produces white, greenish-white, or pink flowers, bell-shaped or bell-funnel-shaped, which can reach about 6 cm in length. It is an especially floriferous cactus: in cultivation, it can produce successive blooms throughout the season. Under Desert CITY conditions, flowering is observed between June and September, usually starting around 4–5 years of age.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas NPK (Ca-Mg) 4-4-7 (4-4) is recommended once a month along with watering. Assimilable calcium promotes the formation of firm tissues and the maintenance of turgidity, while magnesium participates in chlorophyll synthesis. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
