🌱 Morphology
Perennial succulent with a subshrubby habit, branched from the base, with stems that are initially upright but become arched or semi-decumbent and can exceed 20 cm in height. At their tips, they develop rosettes approximately 9–14 cm in diameter, with fleshy, oblong to obovate leaves with a mucronate apex. The surface is covered by an abundant pruinose coating that gives it pink, purplish-grey, or powdery purple hues. The stems also have a waxy coating, especially visible on young shoots.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Family Crassulaceae · Genus Quetzalcoatlia. It is a species endemic to Mexico, known from Jalisco, where it grows in seasonally dry tropical climates. It was initially described from cultivated plants, and its Mexican origin was later documented. Its former name, Graptopetalum superbum, still appears in numerous catalogues and collections.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 9b. As a prudent reference, temperatures below −3.9 °C should be avoided, as this is the theoretical limit for this zone and does not guarantee the plant's hardiness. In Madrid, it should be protected from frost and, especially, from prolonged cold and damp conditions.
☀️ Lighting
Full sun. Approximate PAR DLI: 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹. Abundant light promotes compact growth and pink and purplish hues in the leaves. It should be gradually acclimated to direct sunlight and protected from the most intense radiation during summer heatwaves.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Opportunistic. During active growth, water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. It requires excellent drainage and does not tolerate waterlogging. In winter, watering should be spaced out depending on the temperature and the plant's activity, avoiding keeping the roots moist during cold spells.
🌸 Flowering
It produces branched, relatively long inflorescences in relation to the rosettes. The flowers are small, yellowish-green in colour, with reddish-brown spots on the petals. Their appearance contrasts with the powdery colour of the foliage.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering. Fertilising is not recommended during the winter dormancy period.
