Gasteria 'Yellow' | ex. Gasteria gracilis variegata
€10,60
🌱 Morphology
A small, slow-growing Gasteria, highly compact and prolific in producing offsets, which eventually forms small clusters of rosettes. Juvenile leaves are arranged in two opposite rows and, upon maturing, may gradually twist to form a semi-erect rosette.
The leaves are fleshy, short, and relatively wide, deep green in color, covered in yellow spots, bands, and areas. In this clone, the variegation can appear as small dots and oblong spots arranged in roughly horizontal rows, accompanied by yellow margins and a yellowish diffusion toward the leaf tips. The contrast between the deep green and yellow makes this plant one of the most striking variegated forms historically associated with the name Gasteria gracilis.
It is a miniature plant especially suitable for cultivation in small pots. Its growth is slow, but it can produce numerous offsets, forming a compact clump over the years. Vegetative propagation allows for the preservation of the clone's variegation pattern.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Family Asphodelaceae, tribe Alooideae, genus Gasteria. This is a horticultural plant of Japanese origin, not a wild population currently identifiable with certainty. The historical name Gasteria gracilis Baker is currently unresolved and cannot be used with certainty as an accepted botanical species.
Specialized literature documents several Japanese Gasterias distributed under the old name G. gracilis, including the ‘Pink’, ‘White’, and ‘Yellow’ clones. Alsterworthia notes that the original Japanese descriptions have not been located and that, therefore, it is not possible to establish its botanical identity or parentage with certainty.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 9a
Tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −4 ºC. As it is a variegated clone of horticultural origin, it is recommended to avoid very low temperatures when the substrate remains moist.
☀️ Lighting
Shade–partial shade, with abundant, filtered light. For variegated forms, it is especially important to maintain good light intensity to preserve compact growth and a balanced expression of yellow, avoiding the intense sun of the central hours of the day. Indicative DLI PAR: 10–20 mol/m²/day.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Opportunistic. It is recommended to water when the substrate has dried out, allowing it to dry again before the next watering. During cold periods, watering is considerably reduced. Its slow growth makes it especially important to avoid prolonged waterlogging.
🌸 Flowering
There is insufficient reliable data regarding the flowering season, age of first flowering, or dimensions of the flowers specific to this clone. Since its parentage is undocumented, it is not rigorous to directly assign it the floral calendar of a specific species. If it flowers, it will produce the typical Gasteria inflorescence, with tubular, hanging flowers adapted for pollination by nectarivorous birds.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co. is recommended, featuring high content in potassium and bioavailable calcium. It is applied with watering, reducing or suspending fertilization during the summer dormancy.
9x9 cm gourmet black pot
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot, with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
📏 Gourmet xerophyte in an 8x18 cm pot.
