Ferocactus schwarzii | Schwarz's barrel cactus
ā¬37,10
šµ Morphology:
Solitary, slow-growing cactus with a globose stem that can become short-cylindrical with age. It can reach approximately 80 cm in height and 50 cm in diameter. It has deep, marked ribs with an intense green epidermis. Young specimens typically develop 4ā5 or more golden-yellow spines, acicular and slightly curved backward. A very peculiar characteristic of this species is that the spination progressively decreases with age: in adult specimens, it can be reduced to one or two spines per areola or even almost completely disappear. For this reason, mature plants may more closely resemble an Echinocactus than other Ferocactus.
šĀ Habitat and geographical distribution:
It is endemic to Sinaloa, Mexico, mainly the central and northern parts of the state. It is found at low altitudes, approximately between 30 and 200 m, potentially reaching about 300 m. Its ecology is little studied, but it is considered characteristic of xerophytic scrublands, in dry and stony terrain. Kew recognizes it as an accepted species and includes it within the family Cactaceae.
āļøĀ USDA Zone and minimum cultivation temperatures:
It can be approximately placed in USDA 9bā11. It is not one of the Ferocactus that should be considered particularly cold-hardy, as it comes from warm, low-altitude areas. During winter, it is advisable to keep it completely dry and, when grown in pots, at around 5ā10 °C. It can withstand some light and occasional frost if completely dry, but using an extreme minimum temperature as a reference for safe cultivation is not recommended.
āļøĀ PAR Lighting:
It needs very high light to maintain compact growth and an intense green epidermis. An approximate target of 20ā30 molĀ·mā»Ā²Ā·dayā»Ā¹ DLI PAR during active growth is recommended. Once acclimated, full sun is recommended.
š§Ā Growth cycle and watering: It has a predominantly summer growth cycle and a dry dormancy during winter. During the active season, it needs more water than other Ferocactus species, provided the substrate drains very quickly. In Madrid, it is advisable to start watering in spring when nighttime temperatures are sufficiently mild, performing abundant watering and allowing the substrate to dry completely before watering again. During summer, this cycle can be maintained as long as the substrate dries completely between waterings. From late summer, water should be progressively reduced until suspended in autumn. It should remain completely dry during winter.
šøĀ Flowering: Flowers appear forming a crown around the apex. They are yellow, up to approximately 5 cm in diameter, and can appear relatively early for a Ferocactus: plants capable of flowering when they reach around 12 cm in diameter have been observed. Flowering occurs during the growth season. In Mediterranean conditions, it can be expected mainly between late spring and summer, depending on temperature and accumulated light.
šæĀ Nutrition: During the active growth period, Desert CHOICEĀ® Cacti is recommended, with NPK (Ca-Mg) 4-4-7 (4-4) formulation plus micronutrients. The supply of assimilable calcium, equal to nitrogen, promotes the maintenance of turgor, while magnesium contributes to good physiological functioning. It is recommended to apply by watering once a month from April to September, suspending fertilization during winter dormancy.
This is an inimitable xerophytic cultivated in Madrid in a technological square pot and with the specific Desert SOIL substrate.
