      🌵 Morphology:

      Solitary cactus, with a globose body that becomes ovoid or cylindrical with age. It can reach approximately 1 m in diameter and up to 2.5 m in height in exceptional specimens. It has between 15 and 32 ribs, which are markedly tuberculate in young plants. The areoles normally develop 6–10 robust spines, reddish, reddish-gray, or horn-colored. A single, thick, flattened, and curved central spine stands out, which can reach about 9.5 cm, although in large specimens it can exceed 13 cm.

      šŸŒĀ Habitat and geographical distribution: It is native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, mainly Arizona and Sonora, with recognized presence also in other areas of northwestern Mexico depending on taxonomic treatment. It lives from practically sea level up to about 1,200 m, in the Sonoran Desert, on slopes, alluvial fans, margins of temporary riverbeds, plateaus, and flat lands with sandy, stony, or rocky soils. It belongs to the family Cactaceae.

      ā„ļøĀ USDA Zone and minimum cultivation temperatures:

      It can be approximately placed in USDA 9b–11. It comes from warm desert areas and should not be considered one of the most frost-resistant Ferocactus. In Madrid, it is recommended to keep it completely dry during winter and avoid prolonged exposure to temperatures below -1 °C, especially if there is moisture in the substrate.

      ā˜€ļøĀ PAR Lighting:

      It needs very high illumination during growth to maintain a compact habit, favor good spination, and allow regular flowering. An approximate target of 20–30 molĀ·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of PAR DLI is recommended. Once acclimatized, full sun is recommended.

      šŸ’§Ā Growth cycle and irrigation:

      It exhibits mainly summer growth, with dormancy during the cold season. In Madrid, it is advisable to start irrigation in spring, when night temperatures are sufficiently mild, carrying out abundant irrigation and allowing the substrate to dry completely before watering again. During the summer, this cycle can be maintained as long as drainage is fast. From late summer, water supply should be gradually reduced until it is suspended in autumn. During winter, it should remain completely dry. In its habitat, it withstands extremely arid and hot conditions.

      🌸 Flowering: Flowers appear in the apical zone of adult specimens. They are large for the genus, approximately 6–7.5 cm in length and diameter, with a reddish exterior and a bright red interior, although they can also show yellow tones. The stigma is intense red. In Madrid, with sufficient heat and light, flowering can be expected approximately between July and September.

      🌿 Nutrition: During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® CactÔceas is recommended, with NPK (Ca-Mg) 4-4-7 (4-4) formulation plus micronutrients. The supply of assimilable calcium, equal to nitrogen, favors the maintenance of turgor, while magnesium contributes to good physiological functioning. It is recommended to apply by irrigation once a month from April to September, suspending fertilization during winter dormancy.

      This is an inimitable xerophytic cultivated in Madrid in a square technological pot and with the specific Desert SOIL substrate.

      šŸ“ The size of our basic collection xerophytes are as follows:

      S -> 9cm x 9cm

      L->16cm x 16 cm
