🌱 Morphology
A botanical sculpture that has lost the straight line. Its green stems rise while twisting on themselves, forming irregular helices that turn each branch into a unique piece. The torsion is so characteristic that, when observing an adult specimen, it seems hard to believe that such twisted architecture could have formed naturally.
It is a succulent shrub that can take on an arboreal habit, with fleshy, thick, and generally trigonous stems that develop a very marked helical growth. The branches can reach several centimeters in diameter and feature tubercles upon which pairs of small spines up to approximately 1 cm appear. The leaves are small, inconspicuous, and deciduous. It produces white latex when its tissues are damaged. The specific epithet tortilis, meaning "twisted," refers precisely to this characteristic.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Species of the Euphorbiaceae family, native to southern India and northern and central Sri Lanka. It primarily inhabits dry tropical deciduous forests and scrubland areas, often on open and relatively dry terrain. In India, it is documented especially in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 10a–11b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −1 ºC only under very dry conditions, with perfectly acclimatized specimens and for brief periods; however, available cultivation references are much more cautious and recommend keeping it around 10 ºC or higher during the winter and protecting it from frost.
☀️ Lighting
During active growth, intense lighting is recommended, with a target of 18–25 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR. It tolerates direct sun after progressive acclimatization, and high light helps maintain compact growth and the characteristic twists of the stems.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Winter dormancy. During the active growth period, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. In winter, water intake is significantly reduced, keeping the substrate almost dry. Drainage must be excellent, and the combination of low temperatures and persistent moisture should be especially avoided.
🌸 Flowering
The small cyathia appear in the axils of the stems, clustered on short peduncles. The flowers are inconspicuous, but fruiting produces trilobed capsules approximately 8 mm in diameter. In its natural range, flowering and fruiting have been recorded mainly between June and August.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer specific for succulents is recommended, with high content in assimilable calcium, such as Desert CHOICE® Succulents, applied once a month during watering.
