📍 It creates fabulous shrubby masses for sunny spots in the garden. It will save you time given its very low maintenance!
🌱 Morphology
A huge green cushion that looks as if it had sprouted among the rocks and decided to hide a multitude of small stems beneath its surface. Over the years, the branches multiply from the base and remain so tightly packed against one another that the plant ends up forming an authentic vegetal sculpture, rounded and compact, which from a distance could be mistaken for a moss-covered rock.
It is a low-growing and highly branched succulent that can reach about 30 cm in height and form masses that are much wider than they are tall. The stems are fleshy, green, and usually have 7 angles, although adult specimens may show variation in the number of ribs. The edges are slightly tuberculate, and spiny structures of 6–12 mm appear on them, which correspond to persistent sterile floral peduncles. The leaves are rudimentary and fall off quickly, leaving small, light-colored scars.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
A South African species of the Euphorbiaceae family, distributed across the provinces of Eastern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga, as well as Eswatini and Lesotho. It grows on rocky outcrops and grasslands, forming large, densely branched cushions. Kew places it within dry scrub and desert environments. It is listed as Least Concern (LC) on the South African Red List.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 9a–11b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −7 ºC when completely dry, well-acclimatized, and during brief episodes. There are also historical references to cultivated specimens that withstood temperatures close to −11 ºC, although this data should not be interpreted as guaranteed resistance for any specimen or cultivation condition.
☀️ Lighting
During active growth, intense lighting is recommended, with a target of 18–25 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR. It tolerates and appreciates direct sun after progressive acclimatization.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During the active growth period, it is recommended to water abundantly and let the substrate dry out completely before the next watering. In winter, water supply should be significantly reduced, keeping the substrate practically dry. Its natural habitat combines dry periods with seasonal rains, so rapid drainage is essential.
🌸 Flowering
It produces small yellow cyathia, generally solitary and located near the ends of the stems. The nectar glands can acquire purple or brownish-red tones. Flowering is concentrated mainly during the warm months, although dates may vary depending on cultivation conditions.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a specific fertilizer for succulents with a high content of assimilable calcium, such as Desert CHOICE® Succulents, is recommended, applied once a month when watering.
