Euphorbia polygona var. anoplia | Spineless Euphorbia polygona
€7,95
📍 Striking grayish colors thanks to the pruine it produces. Its ribs are filled at the top with very showy yellow flowers. It grows mainly in a vertical form.
🌱 Morphology
It looks like a small plant fortress from which someone had removed all its weapons. Its green, compact, and perfectly geometric stems rise to form columns with multiple ribs, but instead of being covered in long spines, they show a clean and orderly surface that allows each of its edges to be appreciated. The result is a sculptural, austere, and extraordinarily elegant Euphorbia.
It is a form currently included within the variability of Euphorbia polygona. The stems are succulent, erect, and sparsely branched, generally solitary or forming small groups from the base. They have numerous ribs—usually between 12 and 20 in adult specimens—that run longitudinally along the stem and can become more numerous with age. The epidermis is green to grayish-green and can take on darker tones with intense exposure. In var. anoplia, the spiny structures are highly reduced or practically absent, one of the characters that historically allowed it to be distinguished from other forms of the complex. It produces white latex when its tissues are damaged.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family. Euphorbia polygona is endemic to the Cape provinces in South Africa, where it grows in dry environments and xerophytic scrubland.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 9b–11b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of up to −4 ºC when completely dry, well-acclimated, and during brief episodes. Real resistance depends on acclimatization, water status, and, especially, ensuring the roots do not remain wet during cold periods.
☀️ Lighting
During active growth, lighting of 18–25 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR is recommended. It tolerates very bright exposure and direct sun after gradual acclimatization. High lighting helps keep the stems compact and promotes the appearance of grayish or reddish tones on the epidermis.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During the active growth period, it is recommended to water abundantly and let the substrate dry completely before the next watering. In winter, water intake must be significantly reduced, keeping the substrate practically dry. Fast drainage is essential to avoid root problems.
🌸 Flowering
It produces small cyathia near the top of the stems. The floral structures can show greenish nectar glands or darker tones, characteristics that have been used to differentiate distinct entities within the Euphorbia polygona complex. Flowering is concentrated during the warm months.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a specific fertilizer for succulents is recommended, with a high content of assimilable calcium, such as Desert CHOICE® Succulents, applied once a month when watering.
