🌱 Morphology
It looks like a small African sculpture that decided to store all its strength underground. From a thick caudex emerges a cluster of green, angular stems, topped by large, shiny leaves and, when the time comes to bloom, by a spectacular crown of red and pink tones. It is an Euphorbia that surprises with its contrast: an almost bare architecture for part of the year that, suddenly, transforms into an explosion of color.
It is a succulent shrub with a large tuberous storage root and one or several extended or weakly erect stems, which can reach approximately 1.5 m in height. The stems, up to 4 cm in diameter at the base, feature 4–5 angles and small hardened, branched, reddish or reddish-brown structures, up to about 5 mm long. The leaves are large, fleshy, sessile, and obovate, up to 15 × 10 cm, with very marked venation and a serrated margin. They are deciduous and usually fall when flowering begins. It produces white latex.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
A species endemic to Tanzania, where it is known from a very restricted distribution. It grows at an altitude between about 825 and 1005 m, on red soils in open scrublands dominated by Commiphora and in dry deciduous forests. It belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family and is currently included in Euphorbia; Monadenium magnificum is its synonym.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 9b–11b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of up to −4 ºC in dry conditions, with well-acclimatized specimens and during brief episodes. For container cultivation, it is safer to protect it from frost and keep it completely dry during cold spells.
☀️ Lighting
Light shade. During active growth, intense lighting is recommended, approximately 18–25 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR. It tolerates direct sun after gradual acclimatization, although during hours of peak summer radiation it may benefit from slight protection, especially when it retains its large leaves.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Winter dormancy. During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly and let the substrate dry out completely before watering again. As dormancy approaches, the plant progressively loses its leaves and watering should be reduced until the substrate is kept practically dry during the winter. In spring, the appearance of new shoots and leaves indicates the resumption of activity.
🌸 Flowering
Flowering appears mainly at the ends of the stems. The small cyathia are surrounded by striking scarlet red to dark pink structures, supported by long reddish peduncles, creating an inflorescence much more spectacular than the tiny size of the true flowers. In cultivation in Madrid, it can be expected mainly between late autumn, winter, and early spring, depending on growing conditions.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a specific fertilizer for succulents is recommended, with a high content of assimilable calcium, such as Desert CHOICE® Succulents, applied once a month when watering.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a high-tech square pot, with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
