🌱 Morphology
It looks like a tiny living carpet that has been trapped between the rocks. Dozens of tiny green stems extend from the base and intertwine, forming a low, compact, and surprisingly neat cushion. It is one of those Euphorbias that demonstrates how a tiny plant can have an extraordinary presence.
It forms cushions up to about 10 cm high and 50 cm in diameter, although in cultivation, the stems can become somewhat longer. The stems are cylindrical and feature small tubercles arranged in five spiral rows, a characteristic that helps distinguish it from other closely related species in the Euphorbia tetracanthoides group. Each tubercle presents a small shield and two paired spines of about 5–8 mm, in addition to two shorter stipular structures. It has thickened roots, and the lower branches can spread along the ground and take root upon contact.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
A species of the Euphorbiaceae family, endemic to a very localized area of the Kondoa district in Tanzania. It grows in small soil accumulations within cracks and crevices of rock plates, at around 1,225 m altitude, in dry and open environments. Kew currently recognizes it as an accepted species.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 10a–11b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −1 ºC only in dry, well-acclimatized specimens and during brief exposure. Due to its tropical origin and compact growth, it is advisable to protect it especially from the combination of cold and humidity.
☀️ Lighting
It needs plenty of light to maintain its compact growth and promote the formation of numerous stems. During active growth, a cumulative photosynthetically active radiation of approximately 18–25 mol/m²/day (DLI PAR) is recommended. Direct sun can be used with progressive acclimatization.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During active growth, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before watering again. In winter, water intake should be greatly reduced and kept almost dry, especially when temperatures are low.
🌸 Flowering
It produces small yellow cyathia, just a few millimeters in size, which contrast with the green of the stems. Flowering appears mainly during the warm growing season.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growing period, a specific fertilizer for succulents with high assimilable calcium content, such as Desert CHOICE® Succulents, is recommended, applied once a month during watering.
