🌱 Morphology
Cespitose cactus that multiplies via underground stolons and forms colonies of several stems. The stems are ovoid to cylindrical, slightly narrowed towards the apex, grayish-green to olive-green in color, up to about 15 cm high and 6–8 cm in diameter. It presents 14–16 low, slightly tuberculate ribs with very close areoles. It develops 3–5 rigid central spines, generally brownish, reddish, blackish, or grayish, up to 2.5–3 cm, and 10–12 radial spines appressed to the stem, up to 1.5 cm.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is native to eastern Sonora and western Chihuahua, Mexico. It grows in open forests, desert grasslands, and transition zones with oak forests, in environments where it can be partially protected by vegetation. It belongs to the Cactaceae family.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 8a–11b
It is relatively cold-hardy when kept dry and well-acclimated. It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −7 ºC for brief periods. In winter, it should be kept dry and well-ventilated to avoid rotting problems.
☀️ Lighting
During active growth, it requires very intense lighting, with an approximate goal of 18–25 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR. Direct sun promotes compact growth and better-developed spination, although specimens grown under protection must be acclimated progressively.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. In winter, it should be kept dry and cool. A sufficiently cool winter period encourages the formation of flower buds; excess humidity during this stage increases the risk of rot.
🌸 Flowering
It produces large, subapical, bell-shaped to funnel-shaped flowers, up to about 7–10 cm in diameter. They are yellow or whitish, and may acquire pinkish tones after opening. In Madrid, flowering can be expected mainly between April and June.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot and with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi.
