🌱 Morphology
Generally solitary cactus, globose to shortly cylindrical, up to about 13 cm in height and 10 cm in diameter, although it can reach a larger size in cultivation. It has 11–13 straight, slightly tuberculate ribs and a green to grayish-green epidermis. The areoles are rounded or oval and have wool when young. It is notable for its spectacular spination: 10–13 whitish radial spines, up to 4.5 cm, and 4–7 very robust, curved, and sometimes twisted central spines, which can reach 9–10 cm and practically hide the stem.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Endemic to a small region of Baja California, Mexico, south of Cataviña, near Jaraguay. It inhabits hills, slopes, and rocky outcrops of the Vizcaino Desert in very arid environments with open vegetation. It belongs to the Cactaceae family.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 10a–11b
A warm-climate taxon particularly sensitive to cold and humidity. It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −2 ºC occasionally, provided it is dry and correctly acclimated. In winter, it should be kept protected from persistent frost and moisture.
☀️ Lighting
During active growth, it requires very intense lighting, with an approximate goal of 18–25 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR. Direct sun promotes compact spination and intense coloration, but exposure should be increased progressively for specimens grown under protection.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. It grows mainly during the warm season and can remain practically dormant during the winter. During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly, allowing the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. It should be kept dry in winter, as it is especially susceptible to rot from excess humidity.
🌸 Flowering
Produces large and very showy flowers, approximately 6–10 cm, funnel-shaped, pinkish-purple to intense magenta in color, with an orange to deep red throat. They appear laterally near the apex and, in Madrid, can be expected mainly between May and June.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low levels of nitrogen is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot with substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
