🌱 Morphology
Succulent that forms rosettes approximately 8–10 cm in diameter in its natural habitat, which can grow larger in cultivation. Its fleshy, obovate to spatulate leaves have a narrow base and a wider apical area, with a rounded or slightly pointed tip. The surface is covered with whitish pruinose wax, giving it greenish-gray, bluish, or pinkish hues depending on the light and environmental conditions. With age, it may develop a short stem and produce offsets.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Species endemic to the state of Tamaulipas, in northeastern Mexico, documented in the Sierra de San Carlos, especially on rocky outcrops of Cerro Bufa El Diente at an altitude of around 1,500 m. It grows in cracks and crevices of exposed metamorphic rocks, in an environment where wooded areas alternate with very sunny rocky sites. Family Crassulaceae, series Pruinosae. The specific epithet runyonii honors Robert Runyon, who collected the plant.
❄️ Temperature
USDA 10a (−1.1°C) as a conservative cultivation reference. It is advisable to protect it from frost, especially when combined with high humidity or wet substrate. The USDA zone limit does not guarantee the individual tolerance of the plant.
☀️ Lighting
Full sun, with an approximate PAR DLI of 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹, introduced gradually to prevent scorching. In very hot climates, it benefits from some protection during the hours of maximum sunlight. Abundant light promotes a compact habit and the color nuances of its leaves.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Opportunistic, with growth favored by mild temperatures. Water thoroughly and wait until the substrate has dried out completely before watering again. Reduce watering during cold weather and heatwaves, avoiding both waterlogging and persistent moisture around the rosette.
🌸 Flowering
It produces flower stalks that rise above the rosette and bear bell-shaped flowers, generally reddish or orange, with yellow tones inside. Flowering usually occurs under favorable growing conditions. There is insufficient data to determine the age at first flowering or confirm whether it reblooms.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growing season, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering. Do not fertilize during winter dormancy.
