🌱 Morphology
A large-sized hybrid cultivar, generally a solitary rosette, which develops a short, thick stem and can reach approximately 25–30 cm in diameter, although especially well-developed adult specimens may exceed this size.
The leaves are very fleshy, broad, and have a rounded to slightly wavy outline, with a coloration that combines grayish-blue, violet, and purple, accompanied by pinkish or reddish margins. Its most striking characteristic is the numerous caruncles or bumps that appear on the leaf surface, especially marked in mature specimens, giving the plant a texture reminiscent of a volcanic formation.
During the summer, the leaves may fold downward, acquiring a more triangular and pointed shape, while during the cold months, they tend to flatten out to increase the surface area exposed to light. The pruina that covers the leaves is delicate and can disappear with rubbing, so it is recommended to handle the plant as little as possible.
‘Etna’ is a hybrid obtained by Denise Manley through the cross of Echeveria ‘Mauna Loa’ × Echeveria ‘Barbillion’. It is part of the so-called Volcano Series, along with its parents.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Family Crassulaceae. As it is a hybrid cultivar, it does not have a natural distribution nor can it be assigned to an infrageneric section of Echeveria as is the case with botanical species.
Its ancestry is related to Echeveria with large rosettes and carunculated leaves. The cultivar was developed in cultivation and is maintained through vegetative propagation to preserve its characteristics.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 10a. It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −1 ºC occasionally, provided the substrate remains dry and there is good ventilation.
It is not recommended to expose it to frost or prolonged periods of temperatures near 0 ºC. During the winter, it is advisable to keep it dry and protected from persistent ambient humidity.
☀️ Lighting
Full sun. Indicative DLI PAR: 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹.
It requires very high lighting to maintain the compactness of the rosette and favor the intensity of its bluish, violet, and reddish tones. It tolerates direct sun, but progressive acclimatization must be carried out when it comes from shade or greenhouse conditions.
In summer, facing extreme temperatures, it can benefit from slight protection during the hours of maximum radiation without excessively reducing the total lighting. Insufficient exposure produces more open rosettes and less colored leaves. Specialized cultivation sources agree on recommending full sun or a very bright exposure.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. In Spain, it mainly grows from spring to autumn, while during the winter it significantly reduces its activity. The seasonal behavior of its leaves is particularly striking: in summer they can fold, and during the winter they tend to open and flatten to make better use of available radiation.
During the active period, it is recommended to perform abundant watering and let the substrate dry completely before watering again. Water should not remain trapped in the center of the rosette, as it can encourage the appearance of rot.
With very high temperatures, if a slowing of growth is observed, waterings should be spaced out. In autumn, they will be progressively reduced, and during winter dormancy, the substrate will be kept practically dry.
🌸 Flowering
It produces elongated inflorescences that rise clearly above the rosette. The flowers are bell-shaped, with shades ranging from orange to orange-red and yellow, forming groups along the floral stems.
Flowering occurs mainly during the summer, although in cultivation, it can be advanced or delayed depending on temperature, day length, and lighting conditions.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering. Fertilizing is not recommended during winter dormancy.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a high-tech square pot and with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
