🌱 Morphology
A cultivar or horticultural selection of Echeveria agavoides, generally slow-growing, which forms a compact and symmetrical rosette, usually solitary although it can produce offsets over time. It can reach approximately 15–20 cm in diameter in adult specimens.
The leaves are very fleshy, rigid, and triangular, lanceolate, and acuminate in shape, with a characteristic sharp tip. The center of the rosette maintains a green to grayish-green coloration, while the margins and especially the tips acquire an intense dark red, maroon, or almost black hue. The intensity of this coloration increases with high lighting and cool temperatures.
The contrast between the green leaves and their dark edges resembles a stroke of red pigment running throughout the rosette. In well-grown specimens, the colored margin can occupy a considerable part of the leaf.
There is some commercial confusion between ‘Ebony’, ‘Pink Ebony’, ‘Red Edge’, and ‘Romeo’. ‘Romeo’ has also been marketed under the names ‘Red Ebony’ and ‘Taurus’, while other sources maintain ‘Ebony’ as a different selection of E. agavoides. Therefore, these names should not be automatically considered botanical synonyms.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Family Crassulaceae. Urbiniae series, within the Echeveria genus, corresponding to the group of species with similar flower morphology that includes Echeveria agavoides.
‘Red Ebony’ is a cultivated selection of Echeveria agavoides and, as a cultivar, it does not have its own natural distribution. The species it comes from is native to Mexico, with populations distributed across several states in the center and northeast of the country, where it grows in dry environments and on rocky outcrops.
Echeveria agavoides is a highly variable species in nature and in cultivation, a characteristic that has given rise to numerous selections with different leaf colors and shapes.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 9b. It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −4 ºC occasionally when it is completely dry and protected from humidity. To keep the plant in good condition during winter, it is recommended to avoid the combination of cold, humidity, and poor ventilation.
Cool temperatures also favor the expression of red and dark pigments on the margins, although prolonged exposure to temperatures near freezing increases the risk of damage.
☀️ Lighting
Full sun. Indicative DLI PAR: 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹.
It needs very high lighting to keep the rosette compact and develop the characteristic dark red coloration of the edges and tips. The intensity of the pigments increases with the combination of plenty of light and cool temperatures.
A gradual acclimatization to direct sun should be carried out when the plant comes from protected conditions. In the extremely hot summers of inland Spain, it may be advisable to provide light protection during the central hours, while maintaining high total lighting.
With little light, the leaves separate, the rosette loses compactness, and the margin coloration becomes less intense.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Winter rest. Its growth is mainly concentrated during the temperate seasons, while the drop in temperature and photoperiod during winter reduces its activity. In Mediterranean cultivation, it is advisable to adapt irrigation to the plant's actual activity and not just the ambient temperature.
During the active growth period, it is recommended to perform abundant watering and let the substrate dry completely before watering again. The water should be directed to the substrate, avoiding its accumulation in the center of the rosette.
During summer, if temperatures are very high and the plant slows its activity, watering should be spaced out. In autumn, they will be gradually reduced, and during winter rest, the substrate will be kept practically dry.
🌸 Flowering
The inflorescences rise clearly above the rosette via floral stems that can reach approximately 40–50 cm. The flowers are bell-shaped or urceolate, pinkish-red on the lower part, orange towards the upper area, and with yellow tones inside.
Flowering occurs mainly from spring to early summer, although it may vary depending on cultivation conditions. The flowers appear grouped in small inflorescences and constitute an additional attraction compared to the plant's main ornamental feature: the contrast between the green of the leaves and its dark red margins.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering. Fertilizing is not recommended during winter rest.
