🌱 Morphology
Rhizomatous and acaulescent succulent plant, with a dwarf, compact habit and slow growth, which develops a low and densely organized rosette. New shoots emerge from the rhizome and allow the plant to form small clusters of rosettes over time.
The leaves are short, fleshy, rigid, lanceolate, and pointed, arranged very compactly around the center of the rosette. Its most striking feature is the slightly twisted or spiral arrangement of the leaves, which produces an especially sculptural three-dimensional structure. They feature a dark green coloration with gray-green or silvery-green transverse bands and, in some specimens, lighter margins. The rosette usually remains around 10–20 cm tall, with a similar width.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Family Asparagaceae. ‘Hahnii Spiral Star’ is a cultivar of horticultural origin of Dracaena trifasciata, and therefore does not have a natural distribution of its own.
The parent species is native to western tropical Africa, where it grows in warm and seasonally dry environments. Its underground rhizome and fleshy leaves allow it to store water and withstand prolonged periods of drought.
In traditional horticulture, this cultivar has been marketed as Sansevieria trifasciata ‘Hahnii Spiral Star’. The genus Sansevieria has been taxonomically integrated into Dracaena.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 10a–12b. It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −1 ºC occasionally when the plant is completely dry and protected from humidity. For safe cultivation, it is recommended to keep it above 10 ºC.
Cold combined with moist substrate increases the risk of damage to the roots and rhizome. During winter, it is advisable to keep it protected from frost and significantly reduce watering.
☀️ Lighting
Indicative DLI PAR: 10–20 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹.
It adapts to different light levels, from bright partial shade to positions with plenty of light. Abundant light encourages a more compact rosette and a more pronounced expression of the leaf bands.
It can receive mild direct sun after progressive acclimation. In low-light conditions, it can stay alive, but growth slows down and the rosette may lose some of its characteristic density. Horticultural sources agree that it tolerates indoor conditions quite well, although it develops its shape better with good lighting.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. Its growth is concentrated mainly during warm periods and decreases significantly when temperatures drop.
During the active growing period, it is recommended to water thoroughly and let the substrate dry out completely before watering again. The fleshy leaves and rhizome function as water storage organs, so it tolerates drought much better than excess moisture.
In autumn, waterings should be spaced out progressively, and during winter, the substrate should be kept practically dry. Water should be applied directly to the substrate, avoiding letting it pool in the center of the rosette.
🌸 Flowering
Flowering is occasional in cultivation, especially in adult and well-established specimens. When it occurs, an elongated inflorescence emerges from the base of the rosette.
The flowers are small, white to greenish-white, star-shaped, and grouped along the floral stem. They may release an intense fragrance, especially at night. In cultivation, flowering is much less frequent than vegetative growth.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growing period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering. Fertilizing is not recommended during winter dormancy.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot and with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
