        Dracaena trifasciata (Prain) Mabb. ‘Pineapple’

Dracaena ‘Pineapple’ · Pineapple snake plant · Sansevieria ‘Pineapple’

        🌱 Morphology
A sculpture... A perennial, rhizomatous, and acaulescent succulent plant, with slow growth and a compact habit, that develops a very dense rosette of erect leaves. New shoots emerge from the rhizome, allowing the plant to progressively form clusters of rosettes.

The leaves are fleshy, rigid, narrow, lanceolate, and pointed, arranged closely together around the center of the plant. Its characteristic silhouette, with short and densely packed leaves, resembles the crown of a pineapple, from which the cultivar's name is derived. They present an intense green coloration with darker and lighter transverse bands, creating a subtle yet well-defined pattern. In mature specimens, it can reach approximately 30–40 cm in height, although the habit depends on cultivation conditions.

        🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Family Asparagaceae. ‘Pineapple’ is a cultivar of horticultural origin of Dracaena trifasciata, and therefore does not have a natural distribution of its own.

The original species is native to Nigeria and tropical western and central Africa, extending to Tanzania. It grows mainly in seasonally dry tropical environments, including rocky and dry places, where its rhizome and succulent leaves allow it to overcome periods of water scarcity.

In horticulture, it has traditionally been marketed as Sansevieria trifasciata ‘Pineapple’. Currently, the accepted name for the species is Dracaena trifasciata (Prain) Mabb.; Sansevieria trifasciata is its synonym.

        ❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 10a–12b. It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −1 ºC occasionally, provided it remains completely dry and protected from moisture. For safe cultivation, it is recommended to keep it above 10 ºC.

Cold combined with moisture in the substrate significantly increases the risk of damage to the roots and rhizome. During winter, it must be kept protected from frost and with very infrequent watering.

        ☀️ Lighting
        Indicative DLI PAR: 10–20 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹.

It tolerates low to intense light, although a good amount of light promotes more compact growth and better expression of the leaf pattern. It can receive gentle direct sun after progressive acclimation.

In low-light environments, it can be maintained for long periods, but growth slows down. The RHS explicitly includes the former Sansevieria trifasciata ‘Pineapple’ among the cultivars that tolerate low-light conditions.

        💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. Its growth is mainly concentrated during warm seasons and decreases significantly when temperatures drop.

During the active growth period, it is recommended to water abundantly and let the substrate dry completely before watering again. The succulent leaves and rhizome allow it to store water and withstand prolonged periods of drought.

In autumn, watering should be progressively spaced out, and during winter, the substrate should be kept practically dry, especially when temperatures are low. Water should be applied directly to the substrate, avoiding retention in the center of the rosette.

        🌸 Flowering
Flowering is occasional in cultivation, especially in well-established adult specimens. The inflorescence emerges from the base of the plant and can clearly protrude above the rosette.

The flowers are small, tubular, greenish-white to cream-colored, grouped along the floral stem, and generally fragrant. In favorable conditions, they can appear during the warm months. The species is described by the RHS as a rhizomatous plant with small, tubular, fragrant flowers.

        🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering. During winter dormancy, fertilization is not recommended.

This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a high-tech square pot with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
