Dracaena trifasciata ‘Hahnii’ | Bird's nest sansevieria
€7,95
🌱 Morphology
Perennial, rhizomatous, and acaulescent succulent plant, of dwarf habit and slow growth, forming a compact rosette resembling a small nest. Unlike the typical form of Dracaena trifasciata, which develops long, erect leaves, 'Hahnii' keeps its leaves short and arranged radially around the center of the plant.
The leaves are fleshy, rigid, wide, ovate-lanceolate, and slightly acuminate, with a characteristic spiral arrangement that forms a low, open rosette. They present a dark green coloration, transversally crossed by irregular grayish-green or silvery-green bands. The rosette usually reaches approximately 15–20 cm in height and width, although it can become progressively wider by producing new shoots from the rhizome.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Family Asparagaceae. 'Hahnii' is a cultivar of horticultural origin of Dracaena trifasciata, therefore it does not have a natural distribution of its own.
The species of origin is native to western tropical Africa, where it grows in warm and seasonally dry environments. Its rhizome and fleshy leaves allow it to store water and survive prolonged periods of drought.
The name Sansevieria trifasciata continues to be widely used in horticulture for this plant, but currently the CORRECT name is Dracaena trifasciata.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 10a–12b. It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −1 ºC occasionally when the plant remains completely dry and protected from humidity. For safe growth, it is recommended to keep it above 10 ºC.
Cold combined with moist substrate considerably increases the risk of damage to roots and rhizome. During winter, it must be kept protected from frost and with very spaced watering.
☀️ Lighting
Indicative DLI PAR: 10–20 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹.
It adapts to different lighting levels, from abundant light to bright semi-shade conditions. High lighting favors a more compact rosette and helps keep the transversal pattern of the leaves well defined.
It can tolerate several hours of mild direct sun, but plants grown indoors or in shade must be progressively acclimated. Insufficient lighting does not usually cause immediate damage, although it can slow down growth and cause the plant to lose some of its compact habit.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. Its growth is concentrated mainly during warm periods and decreases noticeably when temperatures drop.
During the active growth period, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before watering again. The fleshy leaves and the rhizome allow it to withstand prolonged periods of drought, so it is much more tolerant to lack of water than to excess humidity.
In autumn, watering should be progressively spaced out, and during winter, the substrate should be kept practically dry. Water should be applied directly to the substrate, avoiding accumulation in the center of the rosette.
🌸 Flowering
Flowering is occasional in cultivation, especially in adult and well-established specimens. When it occurs, an elongated inflorescence emerges from the base of the rosette that clearly exceeds the height of the plant.
The flowers are small, pale green to creamy white, star-shaped, and grouped along the floral stem. They can emit an intense fragrance, especially at night.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering. During winter rest, fertilizing is not recommended.
